ePassports
While the ease of international travel promotes foreign investments, trade & tourism, the security of a nation is at risk with the presence of criminal activities and terrorism. In recognizing this, the international community has responded with a consensus to improve security through the use of new technology such as the inclusion of smart chips and biometrics in travel documents. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations which sets standards for travel documents, recommends that such electronic passports are to use biometric identification (facial, fingerprint and iris recognition): typically, digital facial photo and fingerprint data are to be stored on a contactless microchip inside the passports.

Smart passports
Contactless chip card technology has emerged as the optimal solution for providing both physical and logical identification of passport holders in a reliable manner, while at the same time securing the individual’s privacy and integrity. The ability to store, protect and manage identity credentials, such as biometrics, picture ID, digital certificates etc., makes microprocessor chips an unrivaled technology for secure and convenient authentication at immigration checkpoints. Through chip-based management of identity credentials, governments are able to build the appropriate platform to link travel documents to their rightful owners. Moreover, the advanced standards framework for E-Passports, contributes to the objective of implementing a global and interoperable electronic passport infrastructure.
